The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is optimistic that MPs will soon pass the necessary laws to enable it to efficiently oversee the 2022 General Election.

IEBC acting CEO Marjan Marjan (pictured) says the commission has already presented its proposals to the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) and is awaiting response.

Proposals
“We held a meeting with the MPs last week where they agreed with some of our proposals while they had issues with some,” Marjan said.
At the moment, he said the electoral agency enjoys a cordial working relationship with MPs and expects any outstanding issues to be resolved amicably. 

He clarified that IEBC was not in any way putting pressure on Parliament to pass the outstanding laws, adding that the electoral agency was confident of delivering a credible election.

The Wafula Chebukati led Commission has proposed a raft of laws among them the mode of transmitting the presidential vote, law on recall of MPs, creation of alternatives in the event of failure of the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (Kiems), achievement of the elusive gender rule and its recusal from overseeing political parties primaries.
