National Super League debutants Mara Sugar FC on Saturday made a bold proclamation after an emphatic 5-2 win over Silibwet Leons at Awendo Green Stadium.
The five superb goals by the Sugar Millers showcased the attacking talent in Steve Biko’s coached side and it is difficult to imagine any greater thrill than to register a thrilling maiden win in their debut season.
Mara came into the match with two draws against Shabana FC (0-0) and Vihiga United (1-1) and in their third match of the season they showed how quickly they are settling in the second tier league by nicking their first win with breathtaking execution.
“When you look at how we performed in our first two matches, it showed confidence in our boys was growing and I was confident of scoring more goals in our third match and I am thrilled with the results.

Good footwork
When my boys play with confidence on the pitch they can terrorise opponents,” Biko told People Sport.
Mara were dazzling from the word go and it only took them only eight minutes into the game to get their first goal through Muhammad Baraza with Dennis Maruti providing an assist in what was a goal of simple beauty and conception. The goal seemed to have awaken Mara’s sparking fire upfront and belief as they spaced nicely between all departments, quickly spreading the play, outflanking Leon’s defence, and then good footwork and forward thrust by the forwards left the visitors stunned as Mara went four goals up by the 43rd minutes.
“Our mission is to finish in the top three positions by the end of the season. And as a coach even though this is our first season in the NSL, we are targeting a playoff berth at the end,” said Biko.
