Zamalek took a crucial step toward the CAF Confederation Cup group stage with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kenya Police FC in a tense first-leg encounter at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi.
Despite Kenya Police having several opportunities, it was the Egyptian side that capitalized on their key moment to claim the advantage.
Kenya Police footing
The visitors started strongly, controlling possession early in the match. However, Kenya Police quickly found their footing, and the game became a more even contest.
The hosts created some clear-cut chances but were unable to make them count. Their first came in the 25th minute when a well-executed passing move freed Jaffari Owiti, whose left-footed effort whistled just wide of the post.
Kenya Police had another opportunity in the 41st minute, when Francis Kahata’s through ball toward Owiti was expertly intercepted by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohammed Sobhy, denying the home side a potential opener. Moments later, Police launched a dangerous counterattack, with David Okoth swinging a cross into the box for Jesse Were, but the striker’s finish missed the target.
Zamalek punished Kenya Police for their missed chances in the 43rd minute. Abdullah Al-Saeed curled a precise shot past Patrick Matasi after a free kick was awarded following Aboud Omar’s foul on Mohamed Mohamed near the edge of the box. The goal gave Zamalek a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Zamalek adopted a more defensive approach, allowing Kenya Police to take the initiative. The home side brought on fresh legs, with Alvin Mang’eni and Tyson Otieno replacing Jaffari Owiti and Charles Ouma, giving their attack new energy. Despite their increased possession, Kenya Police struggled to find a breakthrough.
Kenya Police attempts
With just 10 minutes remaining, Kenya Police pushed hard for an equalizer. Jesse Were had a golden opportunity in the 87th minute, but once again, his shot went wide after being set up by Kahata, leaving the striker frustrated.
Zamalek, the reigning Confederation Cup holders, managed to withstand the late pressure from the hosts and held on to their slim advantage. The win puts Zamalek in a strong position ahead of the second leg, with just 90 minutes separating them from another group stage appearance.
