Besides rejecting proposed taxes, Gen Z had demanded that the President fire his ministers and dissolve the House

Young Kenyans yesterday welcomed President William Ruto’s move to fire his entire Cabinet, retaining only Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

The dissolution of the Cabinet and Parliament had been at the centre of recent protests by Gen Z and millennials, besides their opposition to the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

Here are some of the comments from the youths.

Activist Boniface Mwangi hailed the move but urged the President to fire the Inspector-General of police.

“Remember the Inspector- General of Police Koome who has been sending his officers to brutalise, shoot, abduct, torture, and kill innocent Kenyans still in office,” he said on X.

Another X user, Hanifa, said: “Feeling jobless with Murkomen and 99 others.”

In another tweet, Mbiti Mwondo noted: “Bora Nakhumicha ameenda home naeza lewa kidogo!”

Another social media user identified as Dray added: “Ababu is now jobless, akuje tuonee Olympics kwa TV.”said @Krepublics2:

“The best decision by the president. I love the way he now listens to the common mwananchi. It is not too late for him to change his way of doing things. Let’s support him; let’s rally behind him. Our country is bigger than all of us.”

Another Kenyan, who identified himself as @EricMusyoki, quipped: “He has done a good job in listening for the last few days. We are starting to see action positively.”

@PkkipK welcomed the dissolution of the Cabinet, saying the President had demonstrated that he was capable of charting his own political future.

“I once mentioned that President Ruto’s leadership was going to be the most consequential, and his legacy would be defined by the status quo,” he wrote.

“He is a man who has long shown that he was willing to draw his own political path and trajectory. Some, before him, might have done the same, but there was no pressure from the citizens. It was all for their political convenience.”

@SamMwezezo welcomed the President’s move, saying he had listened to the voices of the people.

“Democracy is prevailing once again in Kenya. The power is by and with the people,” he said

@AbroadTanzania welcomed the decision, but warned the President against reappointing the fired CSs when he reconstitutes his Cabinet.

“I think now is enough! Give him a time to appoint other cabinet members and ministers! But if he reappoints the same names in different positions by so called switching positions! You must put pressure on him to go,” they wrote.

But a pessimistic @KisiaNzuki expressed reservations, suggesting nothing good would come out of Ruto’s action.

“Nothing like a win. They are just regrouping to loot more and better,” he tweeted.

@hvtbtbgzwf also expressed misgivings about the President’s decision.

“Firing just to rehire later! Ruto we know you,” the tweet warned.

Another netizen identified as @ guy likericky, quipped: “Digital wankers have made the president withdraw all CSs, by only using a hashtag.”

Another social media user identified as “Miss April also hailed the President’s move.

“Why was the president even calling for national dialogue? He clearly knows what we want. All he has to do is deliver! And we ain’t done.”
