Miriam Chemutai’s dream of boarding a plane for the first time appears to be taking shape.

After taking top honours in the girls’ 5km race during the Nairobi Region Cross Country Championships on Sunday, the sky is now literally the limit for the Class Six pupil.

The 15-year-old now has the national cross country championships slated for February 13 at the Ngong Racecourse to tackle if her dream is to become a reality.

After obliterating a relatively strong team to win her race at the Nairobi West Prisons grounds, Chemutai hopes to represent the country in future.

“I want to represent Kenya at international events in all categories. I know with God guiding me, everything is possible.

Making it to the team means I will be able to board a plane to Togo for the Africa Cross Country Championships,” declared Chemutai.

The youngster studying at Katet Primary School in Lemotit, Londiani,  is aware that it needs more than just her efforts to succeed.

On Sunday she led her training mates from Lemotit Athletics Training Camp to a podium sweep, all making it to the nationals.

“I was able to run better because we have a better understanding among ourselves. I want to thank my coach and colleagues for my victory today,” she added.

She clocked 17:17.3 ahead of Fancy Chepkorir, 17:22.7, Sharon Chepkemoi, 17:40.9, and Daisy Chepkorir, 17:51.0. Florence Chepkoech timed 17:52.2.

Fancy, Sharon and Florence are all Form One students at Saramek Secondary, while Daisy is a Class Six pupil at Katet Primary School.

“I want to strike a balance between my education and running. That way I will be able to support my family in future,” added Chemutai..

Nairobi region was using the event to select their team for the national championships.
