As political infighting continues to escalate in the Mount Kenya region, leaders have been warned against hyping unnecessary political temperatures and instead concentrate on delivering services to Kenyans.

Maragua Member of Parliament (MP) Mary Wamaua told his fellow legislators to tone down on their clamour for succession politics and instead train their focus on development and advancing their electorates’ interests.

“Whatever is happening in the Mt. Kenya region is about political interests and greed. There are leaders who think things can happen when they are in certain positions.

“There are others who like undermining and cutting others to size irrespective of other responsibilities given to them,” Wamau told journalists.

Wamaua particularly took issue with her Laikipia East counterpart Mwangi Kiunjuri and other MPs who have trained their guns on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, telling them to shun political bickering and consider serving their electorates.

The MP who spoke in Thika Town regretted that politicians fighting Gachagua have failed to improve the social-economic status of their people, citing poor road networks, a lack of electricity, and water scarcity as some of the challenges facing the people in their constituencies.

While describing anti-Gachagua political troops as rebels whose hate for the DP is unfounded, Wamaua rooted for unity of purpose in the region and called on all leaders to rally behind him, being the top-most-ranking government official in the region.

“What was wrong with Gachagua calling for unity of purpose in Mt Kenya? In other areas, leaders meet and agree to push for their interests in one accord. Where is the sin in Gachagua advocating for the same here in central?”  the MP asked.

Last week, Gachagua’s critics, led by Kiunjuri, Joseph Wainaina (nominated), John Kiarie (Dagoretti South), John Kiragu (Limuru), and Duncan Mathenge (Nyeri Town), met in Eldoret to strategise, an event that brought more than 300 representatives of the Kikuyu community from the Rift Valley region.

During the meeting, the politicians accused Gachagua of disuniting the region against the current government and called on the second in command to accept the new political arrangement and stop ‘undermining’ his boss, William Ruto.

But Wamaua described the politicians as failures who have failed to deliver in their former government positions and called on them to keep off succession politics for the sake of developments.

“When we were forming the government, you were very busy putting your TSP house in order. You are now the loudest saying that Gachagua is fighting the government he determinedly fought for.

“Come to Maragua and organize such a meeting; you will be responded to by women. Keep off Gachagua, and if there is anything wrong with him, come say it here in the mountain. Let us join hands together here in Mt. Kenya. We are in government, and we are not leaving,” said Wamaua.

Advice for Gachagua

She at the same time called on Gachagua to begin looking for friends and consider re-uniting with his former political nemesis in the wake of calls for unity in the country.

“Follow the footsteps of your boss William Ruto and unite with your former critics for the sake of development,” Wamaua urged Gachagua.

She at the same time dared Kiunjuri and his troops to organize a meeting in the populous Mt Kenya region and deliver their anti-Gachagua messaging, saying that any attempt will be thwarted by good-loving citizens who are tired of daily politics.

Kiunjuri has been accusing Gachagua of engaging in political bigotry and disrespecting elected leaders, while on the other hand, the DP has constantly accused some leaders from the region of collaborating with his enemies and betraying him.
