Turkana and Marsabit counties and their partners have launched a five-year initiative to sustainably harness the economic potential of Lake Turkana.

The programme, spearheaded by the World Food Programme (WFP) and UNESCO, the governments of the two counties and others, aims to transform the region’s fishing industry and improve livelihoods.

This was announced when Turkana commemorated World Fisheries Day at Eliye in Kangatotha ward.

The event was led by Turkana Deputy Governor John Erus and his Marsabit counterpart Solomon Gubo.

Erus emphasised the need for greater investment and collaboration to overcome challenges in the fishing sector.

“The fishing sector on Lake Turkana faces numerous challenges. We must invest in infrastructure such as upgraded beach management units and cold storage systems to improve efficiency and boost production,” he stated.

Erus also acknowledged the contributions of various stakeholders to the development of the fishing industry in Turkana.

Erus also addressed recent conflicts between fishermen and Kenya Wildlife Service Rangers, calling for harmony in the sector.

Gubo echoed the need for unity and concerted efforts to address the challenges.

He highlighted the importance of aligning interventions with the President’s directive on conflict resolution.

WFP deputy country director Sonkoh Baimankay commended the leadership of Turkana and Marsabit counties for their commitment to the programme.

“The initiative will not only unlock Lake Turkana’s economic potential but also enhance food security for vulnerable communities in the face of climate change,” Sonkoh noted.
