Ugandan Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda on Tuesday launched a fundraising drive to seek emergency funds to support coronavirus (COVID-19) response.
Rugunda, who is the chairperson of the country’s National Task Force on COVID-19 Response, launched the drive dubbed ‘National Response Fund to COVID-19’. The fund will support government efforts to curb the virus spread, which has so far infected 52 people.
He said President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Mary Karooro, the minister in charge of general duties, Office of the Prime Minister to lead the mobilization drive.
“I want to thank all the people in and out of Uganda who have so far generously contributed to this. It is this collective effort that will help us succeed,” Rugunda said.
On the same occasion, the Prime Minister received and acknowledged donations from various individuals and corporations, including Chinese companies who donated funds, protective equipments and vehicles to support the fight against the deadly respiratory disease.
Museveni on Friday last week appealed to rich individuals and factories in the country to donate at least one new brand four-wheel drive vehicle to build a fleet to help in the fight against COVID-19 or contribute food for the most vulnerable people. (Xinhua)
