Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Helb shocker

Thousands of students set to join universities in September might miss out on government funding. Reactions to these happenings are expected to dominate the headlines today.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyang’ala on Thursday told MPs they are unable to cater for loans and scholarships for the 2023 KCSE exam candidates who have already been placed in various universities.

Some 153,292 students are set to join the university.

Documents tabled before the Education Committee show that despite the said vote having a shortfall of Ksh22.9 billion required to sustain the learners in the Universities, the budget for the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) that had initially been allocated Ksh31.9 billion in the estimates has been reduced by Ksh710 million while monies meant for Universities Fund (UF) for scholarships have been reduced by Ksh2.6 billion from the initial Ksh19.6 billion.

Planned power interruptions

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced scheduled power interruptions that will today hit Kilifi County.

The areas to be affected in Kilifi are the parts of Mtwapa and Kanai.

The power blackout that will last from 9 am to 5 pm will specifically affect Barani Primary, Barani Four Farm, Barani Timboni, Mtwapa Gardens, Kwa Mutua, Kwa Kariuki, Toto Dogo, Bilady, Mtwapa primary and adjacent customers.

Azimio cracks

Cracks in Azimio is also expected to dominate headlines today.

Three factions have now emerged within the Azimio la Umoja following Wednesday’s fallout over the formation of a government of national unity.

The coalition formed more than two years ago to take over power from retired President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Thursday, July 18, 2024, facing its greatest test since inception with factions allied to its two principals, Opposition leader Raila Odinga and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka disagreeing on joining President William Ruto’s proposed broad-based cabinet.

While Raila’s allies supported calls for the formation of the broad-based cabinet and expressed willingness to take up ministerial positions, those allied to Kalonzo rejected the plan outrightly.

A third faction also emerged, neither supporting joining the government nor opposing the plan, but putting forth a raft of demands that they want to be implemented before they decide on whether to join the government, have a national conversation or not.
