Anti-government protests

Gen Z-led anti-government protests are set to continue today. The demonstrations will be happening countrywide.

On social media, Kenyans have been posting “Ruto must go”, calling for continued protests until President William Ruto yields and resigns.

This is despite the Head of State having succumbed to most of the protesters’ demands, including dissolving his entire Cabinet.

On Monday, July 15, 2024, President Ruto the Ford Foundation of ‘sponsoring’ violence during the anti-government protests.

The embattled President wants the Ford Foundation “to explain to Kenyans its role in the recent protests.”

US Embassy in Kenya has since issued a security alert to American citizens living in Nairobi, over the protests.

“Calls for protests on Tuesdays and Thursdays continue, in particular for demonstrations in central business districts across the country and road blockages of major thoroughfares. Even protests that seem peaceful can turn violent at any moment. Police checkpoints and traffic disruptions are expected,” the advisory reads in part.

Today’s demonstrations are aimed at piling pressure on the government to take accountability for the lives lost during the previous mass protests sparked by the unpopular Finance Bill, 2024.

Activist Boniface Mwangi Monday evening confirmed that the peaceful protests will go down as planned until the government takes some form of responsibility for the deceased protesters.

The activist has also urged those who cannot take part in the protests to stay home in memory of those who lost their lives.

“If you can’t take part in the protests, stay home in memory of the heroes we have lost in the peaceful protests, and in solidarity with the GenZs who are fighting for a better Kenya,” Mwangi stated through a post via his X account.

Former Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana on Monday, July 15, 2024, urged the opposition to keep off the Gen Z protests.

The power company said the interruptions are necessary to facilitate system maintenance.

The utility company said the planned power interruptions will take effect at diverse times between 9am and 5pm.

Kware deaths

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of the prime suspect in the murder of women whose bodies were recovered at a Kware dumpsite in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums.

The suspect identified as Collins Khalisia is expected to be presented in court where the DCI will seek more days to detain him, to conclude the investigations.

As the probe goes on, families of the at least 10 victims of the brutal killings will be camping at the City Mortuary to see if they will be able to identify their loved ones.

The postmortem on the bodies recovered from Kware dumpsite in Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Nairobi, began Monday evening at City mortuary.

Government pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor and a team of officers from DCI spent the better part of Monday taking DNA samples from the bodies.
