Reactions to Gachagua impeachment

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, impeached in a historic vote on a motion for his removal, a top news event that is expected to continue attracting reactions.

A total of 281 Members of Parliament (MPs) voted for his removal while 44 backed him and one abstained.

MPs broke into song and dance shortly after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula made the announcement at 9.20 pm.

The 59-year-old politician who rose to a DP after one term as an MP had dramatically fallen out with his boss, President William Ruto.

Gachagua faced 11 counts of impeachment revolving around gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office and corruption.

His efforts to whip up the emotions of his Central Kenya base with claims of persecution seem to have failed him.

Ruto’s key allies led the onslaught against Gachagua.

“Mr Speaker we are here to do what is right. And what is right is always not easy, it is not always popular. And what is right today, might not be popular, especially for a person coming from Mt Kenya. That is why I support this motion,” National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah said.

Tree planting

Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Joho will today lead his ministry staff, host communities and partners in a tree planting exercise.

The event will happen at Bujra, Kiti cha Ribe and Bula Mikoko sites in Kipini Mangrove swamp in Tana River county.

This comes just a day before the Mazingira Day holiday that will be celebrated tomorrow Thursday, October 10, 2024.

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, directed Kenyans on activities they should do during the Mazingira Day holiday.

To mark Mazingira Day, CS Duale has directed Kenyans to participate in environmental conservation initiatives.
