Day 2 public participation

Members of the public will have another full day to submit memoranda and their opinions in their constituencies concerning the planned ouster of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua through impeachment.

This comes after the clerk of the National Assembly extended the public participation timelines after most of the county forums were delayed or ended before 5:00 pm in various areas, including the Bomas of Kenya in Nairobi.

Gachagua faces the battle of his life after more than 80 per cent of members of parliament appended their signatures in support of his ouster motion tabled in the House on October 1, 2024.

Leaders develop cold feet

The planned impeachment of Gachagua on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, faces a fresh hurdle after a section of leaders drawn from the Mount Kenya region developed cold feet and vowed to shoot down the motion.

The legislators are Tetu MP Geoffrey Wandeto, Nyeri MP Rahab Mukami, and Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina.

Parliament will need at least 229 MPs to impeach Gachagua before informing the Senate of their decision within seven days. After that, the Senate may form a committee to investigate the validity of the accusations against the DP.

If the grounds hold no water, the DP survives, but if the Senate finds him with a case to answer, Gachagua will be allowed to defend himself before the legislators take a vote. In case two-thirds of the Senators vote against him, the Deputy President will be impeached.

Exciting football action

Crystal Palace will be hosting Liverpool at Selhurst Park in an early kick-off match at 2:30 pm today, while Arsenal will host Southampton at 5:00 pm. The Gunners are in a tight race to top the table, falling just a point below Liverpool and a goal behind title favourites Manchester City.

The other Premier League fixtures lined up today are Brentford vs Wolves, Manchester City vs Fulham, Westham vs Ipswich, Leicester vs Bournemouth, all at 5:00 pm and Everton vs Newcastle at 7:30 pm.
