Gachagua’s impeachment debate

This is a topic that is set to dominate the national headlines as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua fights what looks like the biggest battle in his political career.

Since Gachagua stated that those plotting to take him out of office are closer to President William Ruto, the debate has gathered incredible speed, with some lawmakers defending him while others attacking him.

On Monday, September 26, 2024, the DP said that a number of his allies have been targeted by the state agencies for harassment and legal issues. Some lawmakers allied to the former Mathira Member of Parliament have been linked with the Gen Z protests that mainly occurred in June.

“The use of the criminal justice system to manage politics is an outdated political strategy that was used in the past. President William Ruto and I, on assuming office, gave an undertaking to the people of Kenya that never again shall the criminal justice system be called upon to help in the management of politics.

“This evil scheme is to associate them with violent demonstrations that took place in late June, in a futile attempt to soil my name and hopefully create grounds for the mooted impeachment proceedings against me. Kenyans are intelligent people.

“They know what factors made Kenyans take to the streets. Kenyans also know what the real problems in Kenya are. They surely know Rigathi is not among them. Let our agencies remain professional, follow the rule of law, and keep off politics,” Gachagua said.

Kalonzo’s support

Meanwhile, Wiper Democratic Movement Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka vowed to stand with Gachagua.

“It is very unfortunate that instead of consoling the families of the 21 precious angels who perished in the tragic Hillside Endarasha Academy fire, Ruto is busy racking up frequent flier miles. Instead of directing his efforts towards strengthening the schools’ safety system to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again, Ruto has allowed his henchmen to distract the country with an impeachment motion against his deputy assistant.

“Instead of addressing the Adani heist and those behind the blatant attempt to take control of key security and strategic infrastructure, Ruto’s priority is to capture the opposition. As the government is waiting, we will not allow these distractions, including an impeachment motion against the Deputy President, to pass unopposed,” Kalonzo stated.

Political players and current leaders, especially from the Mount Kenya region, will be closely watched to see where their allegiance lies in this Gachagua ouster plot.
