79th UNGA session

The 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will likely feature among the day’s top news events as it officially kicks off.

The first day of the high-level General Debate will be today, Tuesday, September 24, 2024. The event will continue through Saturday, September 28, and conclude on Monday, September 30, 2024.

President William Ruto who is in New York, USA, kicked off his participation at UNGA 79 by delivering remarks at the Summit of the Future’s interactive dialogue on September 22, followed by the plenary session later on.

President Ruto has been holding a series of meetings with world leaders and international organisations to strengthen Kenya’s partnerships and explore opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, and diplomacy.

On Monday, September 23, Ruto wooed American investors in an effort to have them explore Kenya’s market opportunities.

He has also been campaigning for Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission chairmanship bid, on the sidelines of UNGA 79.

“We will deepen our ties with Senegal to advance shared goals in peace, development and continental integration. In New York, discussed Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson with President @PR_Diomaye of Senegal,” Ruto stated in a statement shared via his X account on Tuesday, September 24, 2024.

Gachagua impeachment plot

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss has sought to confirm a plan to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which is expected to continue generating mixed reactions.

Boss further went on to assert that she will take charge of the impeachment process when the matter comes up at the National Assembly.

“I will send you home myself. I am putting you on notice. You are going to be impeached, and I can confirm that to you,” she said in a video that has been circulating on social media.

This comes after Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana filed a censure motion in the Senate to discuss Gachagua’s character.

Mungatana stated that DP Gachagua has breached the law provisions on how he should conduct himself in office and administer his roles, accusing him of disregarding his oath of office.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, September 23, 2024, Mungatana said Gachagua, since assuming office, has made utterances that continue to create tensions and divisions among Kenyans.

Mungatana’s move has also continued to attract mixed reactions, with a section of Kenyans and leaders telling him that the senate cannot initiate Gachagua’s removal from office.

Reactions to Malala’s woes

Former Kakamega county senator Cleophas Malala’s political woes seem not to be ending any time soom.

Weeks after he was ousted as the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary General, Malala has now claimed that his son and brother-in-law were abducted at gunpoint on Monday, September 23, 2024, by unknown people.

This is expected to attract mixed reactions throughout the day, considering the fact that the politician popularized President William Ruto’s bid in Western region during the 2022 presidential campaigns.

Malala’s claims comes after he joined embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for a series of rallies in Githurai, Kiambu county on Sunday, September 22, 2024.

In a statement shared on Tuesday night, Malala says the two were tortured for over six hours by the men who wanted to know where the politician was.

According to Malala, the abductors forced the duo to show them the way to his residential home in Kitengela.

He says the two were dumped along Thika Road after the abductors failed to trace Malala and his wife.

“My Son and my 19-year-old brother-in-law were abducted at gunpoint. They were tortured for six hours to disclose my whereabouts or that of my wife and to show them the way to my residence in Kitengela,” Malala stated.
