ELRCASE ceremony

Chief Justice Martha Koome is set to preside over the opening ceremony of the second Employment and Labour Relations Court Annual Symposium and Exhibition on Monday.

The event, held at the Kenya School of Government, follows the inaugural symposium in July 2023, which took place at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The first Employment and Labour Relations Court Annual Symposium and Exhibition (ELRASE) marked the 10th anniversary of the court, established in 2012.

It provided a platform for participants to share experiences, challenges, best practices, and reform proposals aimed at promoting positive growth, human dignity, and harmony in employment and labour relations.

World Ozone Day

Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale will preside over the World Ozone Day celebrations this Monday at the Kenya Meteorological Department Headquarters in Nairobi. The theme for the 2024 event is Advancing Climate Action.

The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed on September 16, commemorates the signing of the Montreal Protocol in 1987, a global agreement designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of ozone-depleting substances.

Though the hole in the ozone layer has shown signs of recovery, the gases responsible for its depletion are expected to persist for another 50 to 100 years.

SHIF sensitization

The Ministry of Health will launch a sensitization and training program on Monday in preparation for the rollout of the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) on October 1, 2024.

SHIF will replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) as part of Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) initiative.

Originally slated for an earlier launch, the SHIF registration process began on July 1, 2024, with full implementation set for October.

Under SHIF, formal sector employees will contribute 2.75% of their monthly salaries, while informal sector workers will pay a fixed monthly amount. The Social Health Act 2023 mandates registration, and failure to comply will result in penalties.

Police Service

Kenya Police Service officers in Nairobi are expected to meet with their respective legal officers for briefings, as over 50 officers have been summoned by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

The officers, scheduled for questioning on Tuesday, will be grilled over allegations of deaths, serious injuries, and other unlawful acts committed by police during the 2024 Finance Bill demonstrations led by Gen-Z and the Azimio protests of 2023.

More than 15 senior police commanders, including Bungoma County Police Commander Francis Kooli, have been summoned to appear before IPOA detectives from Tuesday to Thursday for grilling and to record statements.
