Kenya Aviation Workers Union strike
Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) begins its nationwide strike today after yesterday’s go-slow caused long queues at the nation’s gateway- Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
This follows a strike notice issued in August where they demanded the resignation of the entire board of the Kenya Airports Authority and managers at the JKIA following reports of a planned takeover by an Indian conglomerate- Adani Group.
Further, the union expresses fears that Adani plans to purge workers at the JKIA and introduce foreign labour. They also note that the surviving staff would have their terms of employment significantly watered down in the proposed 30-year lease of JKIA.
School fires raise questions
With investigations ongoing about the Hillside Endarasha Primary School, another fire is reported to have razed Isiolo Boys High School just days after a part of the Isiolo Girls’ School fire.
While Kenya Power has distanced itself from what may have caused the inferno that caused the deaths of at least 21 students and injured more than 14, investigators are working around the clock to establish its cause.
President Ruto in a statement shared via his official X account stated that compliance with government regulations on curbing fire accidents in learning institutions is not negotiable.
