The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested more than ten persons suspected to be stealing from locked motor vehicles around Nairobi.

On Wednesday, a team of detectives drawn from the Nairobi regional DCI headquarters arrested a four-man gang suspected to have stolen Sh850,000 from a locked motor vehicle in Lang’ata.

The arrest followed a manhunt after a resident of South C reported at the Langata police station that his vehicle had been broken into and an unspecified amount stolen.

The man had left the money inside his locked motor vehicle and advanced to shop at Uchumi supermarket in Langata only to return and find his vehicle broken into and all the money stashed in a Khaki envelope missing.

Adjourned matter

On reviewing CCTV footage from an adjacent business premise, it was established that the four-man gang aboard a white Suzuki Swift Registration Number KDB 771T had been captured breaking into the car and taking off with the money.

The detectives, drawn from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and the Operations units, launched investigations leading to the arrest of Shaban Maingi Rashid, Steve Malvin Njagi, Johnson Muisyo Mbingu and Mashud Onyango Dax alias Sudi.

At the time of arrest, the four were aboard a Suzuki Swift Reg No KDH 154B but upon further search, the detectives recovered a master key and retrieved another set of number plates KDP 989N from inside the vehicle that also matched the vehicle’s insurance details.

The detectives have further established that one of the arrested thugs, Rashid has previously been arrested for similar offences within Lang’ata area and has an ongoing case before court.

The suspect was involved in another case earlier this year where detectives rounded up five miscreants that allegedly stole Sh900,000 and another USD 15,000 (Sh1.9 million) from a businessman based in Nairobi’s South C area.

The victim reported at Akila Police Station in Lang’ata that he had just parked his BMW X1 along Muhoho Road opposite Rubis Petrol Station and entered an auto parts shop when the felons struck.

He had gone back to his car less than five minutes later, only to find a smashed rear window and a missing bag that contained the money.
