Eight suspected members of the Wakali Kwanza criminal gang were yesterday charged with several counts relating to robbery with violence in a Mombasa law court.

The suspects were charged with robbery with violence, preparation to commit a crime and trafficking in narcotic drugs.

Appearing before resident magistrate Martin Rabera the eight were charged in two lots of four each.

The first group of four  Alfred Shadrack Ambetsa alias Boika, Bakari Athmani Juma, Hamisi Athmani and Abubakar Bakari Hamisi  were charged that on November 30, 2019 at Bamburi area in Kisauni jointly with others not before court while armed with crude weapons, robbed a man of a bag with and smart phone valued at Sh15,000. 

They also stole uniform of unknown value and also wounded the victim. They further face a second charge of planning to commit a felony.

In a second count they were  charged that on December 13, 2019 at Mshomoroni area in Kisauni  they were  armed with intent to commit robbery with violence. 

Dangerous weapons

And in the second lot the other four Ali Abdalla Salim alias Alivirosta, Samuel Gacheru Ndungu alias Chuma, Gabriel Muema Munyoki and Ali Said, were charged that on February 2, 2019, at Hongera area within Kisauni sub county, jointly with others not before court, armed with dangerous weapons robbed Sanale Ole Sambili cash Sh8,000 before wounding the victim. 

The four were charged with five other counts of robbery with violence, where they were accused of attacking different people within the cause of last year and injuring them. They all denied the charges and were released  on a Sh1 million bond each with a surety of similar amount. The matter will be mentioned on January 13 for pre-trial.
