Youngsters Bernard Yegon and Daniel Kinyanjui will bank on their experience from the previous World Athletics Under-20 Championships as they prepare for the upcoming global event in Cali, Colombia.
The duo was part of Team Kenya which competed at the previous championship held at Kasarani in Nairobi but failed to win medals in the men’s 3,000m.
Kinyanjui was the better-placed Kenyan in seventh place with 8:09.40 while Yegon faded down to ninth in 8:12.96 in a race that was won by Tadese Worku in 7:42.09, a new championship record.
“We have gained more experience from the time we last held the event last year which is good for us and the country,” said Kinyanjui.
“We are not going to fear anybody because we know what we want. At the previous event I think lack of experience made us have fear in a way,” he added.
International events
Yegon on the other hand said taking part in international events in the last few months has continued to better him as an athlete.
“Our coaches have been guiding us to be better on how to approach races. I can say we are better placed for the upcoming challenge,” he added.
The duo is part of under-20 athletes at Keringet Athletics Training Camp located in Nakuru County.
The camp based at Keringet Boys High School has 24 boys and 16 girls who have specialised in track events and a few field events.
The 26-year-old camp has produced Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon, former world marathon champion Geoffrey Kirui, Commonwealth Games 800m champion Wycliffe Kinyamal and most recently World U-20 5000m gold medallist Benson Kiplagat among others.
