World athletics officials to inspect Kenya’s stadiums

Kenya’s ambitions to host the prestigious World Athletics Championships in 2025 will be confirmed this month as seven officials from the world body land in the country for inspection of facilities.

Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei revealed the new development while being optimistic that Kenya will get the hosting rights for the 2025 global showpiece.

The seven officials from World Athletics who are part of the panellists involved in the selection of the hosting country will be in Kenya on the 25th and 26th of April.

“This is our time. The officials will be landing in the country to see what we have in readiness for the event. We are hoping to get a good report as they inspect the facilities in Nairobi.

Kenya has successfully hosted global athletic events and our previous good record with the likes of World U-20 Champions in 2021 can help us to be awarded the hosting rights,” said Tuwei.  Facilities of interest before being allowed to host the Championships are hospitality, transport, Kasarani Stadium training grounds and also Covid 19 protocols.  Kenya requires four training grounds for athletes to boost its chances of hosting the Championships.

Tuwei said that the country has more than four training facilities and there is nothing to worry about.

Among the grounds that will be shown to the officials are; Nyayo Stadium, Kenyatta University, the new Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu, Jamhruri Sports Ground and the newly built and ready to be launched Langata Barack’s Stadium.

He also noted that the completion of Nairobi’s Express Way will be of help to convince the officials about ease of mobility from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to the various stadiums earmarked for the championships.

The officials will also be keen to see government commitment to host a flawless event.
