Wazalendo FC’s journey to glory

Wazalendo FC emerged victorious in the Pamoja Soccer Tournament, held at Brampton’s SaveMax Sports Centre, marking a significant step in Toronto’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.


Kenyan side Wazalendo FC clinched gold in a thrilling final against Tanzania’s Zan Heroes FC, securing a 4-3 victory with Ayub Moses scoring a brace, alongside goals from Captain Isaac Onyango and Richard Nene.


Ayub Moses claimed the coveted Golden Boot Award, while Richard Nene was honored as the Most Valuable Player. Anwar Suleiman of Tanzania received the Golden Glove Award. In the tournament’s third-place playoff, Uganda secured a narrow 5-4 win over Ivory Coast, captivating spectators with a thrilling nine-goal encounter.


Organized by the Kenyan Canadian Association, the tournament not only showcased football prowess but also promoted Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing, supported by the Ontario Youth Wellness Grant.


“It was such a good tournament, we are proud of our victory. I want to thank the Kenyan Canadian Association for the good work and to all the teams that participated,” stated Onyango, expressing gratitude for the tournament.


Tanzania’s captain, Ali Faki, though regretting missed opportunities, acknowledged the competition and looked forward to future contests.


Uganda’s captain, Alex Kabwama, praised the tournament’s competitiveness and intensity, eagerly anticipating future editions.


President and Executive Director of the Kenyan Canadian Association, Ephraim Mwaura, highlighted plans to expand the tournament to 12 countries next year, emphasizing the need for support to nurture talent in Toronto’s diverse youth.


Mwaura urged Sport Canada and stakeholders to back this initiative, emphasizing its potential benefits for the black community’s talented youths.


The Kenyan Canadian Association aims to collaborate with sports clubs and calls for increased funding to support soccer clubs and build the capacity of young talents across Canada.
