Wang’uru Stadium upgrade complete, set to boost sports

By , July 13, 2025

The newly revamped Wang’uru Stadium is now complete, positioning Kirinyaga County as a rising hub for sports and economic growth.

The 10,000-capacity stadium, featuring covered terraces and a freshly planted pitch, is expected to host both local and international sporting events.

Principal Secretary of the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, Raymond Omollo, announced the milestone on July 13, 2025, via a post on X. He described the renovation as part of Kenya’s broader strategy to invest in sports infrastructure as a tool for youth empowerment, talent development, and regional economic progress.

“The renovation and upgrade of the 10,000-capacity Wang’uru Stadium in Kirinyaga marks a major milestone in Kenya’s ongoing investment in sports infrastructure,” Omollo said. He added that the facility is set to provide a platform for nurturing talent and hosting major tournaments that will draw crowds from across the country and beyond.

The stadium’s impact extends beyond sports. According to Omollo, the facility will stimulate Kirinyaga’s economy by creating new business opportunities for local hotels, transport providers, and food vendors, especially during high-profile events. A 2019 University of Nairobi study found that such developments can boost local GDP by up to 15% through increased tourism and job creation.

For young people in the region, Wang’uru Stadium opens doors to professional careers in sports, arts, and event management. It provides a venue where athletes can train and compete at higher levels, reducing unemployment and promoting positive social engagement.

Nationally, the stadium enhances Kenya’s capacity to host international competitions, aligning with President William Ruto’s vision of using sports as a driver for development. “Sports and stadiums are the heartbeat of our youth’s future,” President Ruto said recently, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building world-class facilities.

The Wang’uru upgrade comes at a critical time, as the country grapples with broader infrastructure challenges and social tensions. While projects like the Kasarani and Nyayo stadium renovations face delays, the completion of Wang’uru offers a positive sign of progress.

As the official opening approaches, the stadium stands as a symbol of opportunity and growth, offering both athletic promise and economic benefits for Kirinyaga and the nation at large.
