By Luke Oluoch, July 28, 2025Kenyan volleyball sensation Sharon Chepchumba has secured a move to Azerbaijan, where she has signed with Ganja Volleyball Club.
Chepchumba’s new side confirmed the arrival of the Malkia Strikers’ opposite player, acclaimed for her powerful shots, this Monday, July 28, 2025.
“Our team has signed a contract with Sharon Chepchumba, a member of the Kenyan national team. The volleyball player spent the last season in Vietnam’s Giang Lao Cai. During his career, the player wore uniforms in Kenyan, Turkish, and Greek clubs,” the club stated.

Olympian
Chumba, a two-time Olympian with Kenya, started her career as a footballer before switching to volleyball, where she has gone on to make her name.
She honed her skills at Kwanzanze Secondary School under the youth coach, Justin Kigwari. The Kitale-born starlet joined the Machakos Education Centre from Tartar Secondary School.
She won the East African Games title with Kwanzanze in 2015, and that achievement brought the limelight to her growing career.

After completing her secondary school education, Chepchumba joined Kenya Prisons, where she went on to become an outstanding figure.
On the international stage, she was part of the Kenyan volleyball team that dominated the continent in 2023 alongside Mercy Moin, Yvonne Adhiambo, Jane Wacu, and the late Janet Wanja.
Stints abroad
Chumba, famed for her number 5 jersey, is a former MVP of the African Volleyball Championship in 2023.
In what was a testament to her exceptional abilities following the games, she earned a career step-up, switching to the Greek top-tier side PAOK Volleyball Club, from Aris Thessaloniki.
She added more feathers to her cap by joining the Vietnam top league and has recently been domiciled in Turkey with Edremit Bld. Altinoluk.
Despite missing in recent call-up for the national outfit, the attacker recently recounted fond memories of the team she helped inspire to numerous accolades
“Being part of Team Kenya has been one of the most beautiful and transformative chapters of my life. It shaped me not just as an athlete but as a person; it taught me resilience, unity, pride, and what it truly means to fight for something greater than yourself. I’ll forever carry the lessons, the laughter, the tears, and the memories we built together.
Wearing #5 wasn’t just a number; it was my armour, my story, my heart on my back. I wore it with purpose and pride every single time I stepped on that court. To the national team, you’ll always have a piece of me. I’m rooting for you, always. Go shine,” she reflected.
