Defending East Africa boys’ rugby 7s champions Vihiga High School were stunned 17-0 by Chavakali Boys in the Vihiga County Term 2 ball games final, a shocking defeat that now sees Chavakali lead the charge to the Western Regional Championships slated for July 8-12, 2025.

On their road to the Vihiga County rugby 7s final, EA defending champions Vihiga Friends High School walloped Bugina Secondary 17-5 in the quarterfinals played at Chavakali to set up a semifinal clash with Kegoye Secondary.

Meanwhile, Senende edged out Magui 26-5 in another quarterfinal to book their place in the semis, according to overall results released on June 18, 2025, and made available to People Sport by County ball games Secretary Homer Mugalitsi.

Chavakali Boys hammered Kaptik Secondary 33-7 in another quarterfinal match at the same venue, while Kegoye tossed out Nyangori Boys 12-5 in their quarterfinal encounter, advancing both schools to the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Vihiga Friends High School edged out Kegoye 5-0, while Chavakali Boys crushed Senende Secondary 17-0 to earn a ticket to the county final held at Chavakali Sportsground.

Chavakali Boys went on to stun the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) rugby 7s defending champions, Vihiga Friends High School, 17-0 in the county final.

Immediate former Vihiga County Secondary Schools Games official Robert Kerre, in a separate interview with People Sports, explained that Vihiga’s shock defeat to Chavakali was due to the school fielding an entirely new rugby team for the Term 2 ball games.

“Since Vihiga won this year’s National Secondary Schools Term 1 rugby 15s final by beating Kisii School 14-6 at Shanzu Teachers Training College in Mombasa last April, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) rules disqualified the school from fielding the same team, which included some 2024 EA Games players, in the Term 2 ball games during the Vihiga County tournament,” Kerre explained.

In the girls’ rugby 7s category, Madira Secondary humiliated Vokoli 44-0 in the quarterfinals, Idavaga defeated Keveye 24-0, Tigoi Girls thrashed Kisangula Secondary 15-5, and Mudavadi Secondary silenced Kaimosi 12-0 to earn a place in the semifinals.

Madira then beat Kisangula Secondary 27-0 in the semis, while Tigoi Girls narrowly defeated Idavaga 5-0. In the final, Madira went on to wallop Tigoi Girls 27-0 to be crowned county champions.

Senende emerged second runners-up after sinking Kegoye Secondary 36-0 in the boys’ playoff for third place, while Idavaga pipped Kaimosi 8-0 in the girls’ third-place playoff.

In an interview with People Sports at the end of the Vihiga County Secondary Schools Term 2 ball games, County Secretary Mugalitsi confirmed the final rankings: Chavakali Boys ranked first in boys’ rugby 7s, followed by Vihiga (2nd), Senende (3rd), Kegoye (4th), Nyangori (5th), Bugina (6th), Magui (7th), Kaptik (8th), Gamalenga (9th) and Ebusiloli (10th) out of 16 teams.

In the girls’ category, Madira topped the rankings, followed by Tigoi (2nd), Idavaga (3rd), Kaimosi (4th), Kisangula (5th), Keveye (6th), Vokoli (7th), Kaptik (8th), Goibei (9th) and Bukulunya (10th). Mudavadi Secondary finished at the bottom.
