Unlucky Shujaa falls to South Africa in Vancouver Sevens finals
South Africa put up an impressive performance to win the Vancouver 7s following a 38-5 victory against Kenya 7s in the final at BC Place, Canada.
The Neil Powell coached side dominated the encounter, denying Kenya possession as both teams searched for the opening try.
Handling errors and retaining possession proofed to be the greatest undoing for Kenya, as South Africa capitalised on Shujaa’s mistakes to score the first try.
South Africa fly half Dewald Human set up a charging Angelo Davids, who sidestepped the Shujaa defence to score the first try of the match.
The duo would be at it again as Human set up the ever present Davids through for his second try of the day.
South Africa crossed over for the third try through Sakoyisa Makata at the sixth minute, stretching the lead to 17-0 score line.
Ronald Brown created the fourth try with a well worked move that saw him release the ball to Christie Grobbelaar for the fourth try of the day. 24-0 score line heading to the intervals.
Soon after the break, Human set up Brown with an inside ball for the latter to score. 31-0 scoreline.
Kenya’s attempt to earn a try in the game was met with resolute defence as South Africa proofed a tough nut to crack.
However, the Innocent Simiyu coached side would score the consolation try through Mwamba RFC fly half Daniel Taabu who capitalised on a numerical advantage after South African Human was yellow carded for an infringement.
South Africa replied immediately with a kick and chase from Darren Adonis to land the final try to win the clash 38-5 and be crowned the Vancouver Sevens champions.
South African Ronald Brown was awarded player of the final award for his heroics in the just concluded Vancouver Sevens.
Prior to the final, Blitzboks had beaten Kenya 33-14 in the pool stage phase.
Both teams will now shift focus to the final leg of the 2021 HSBC sevens series-Edmonton 7s.
