Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has extended his deep sympathies to the family of deceased volleyball star and trainer Janet Wanja.
In a statement on Saturday, December 28, 2024, Uhuru mourned Wanja as more than an athlete, noting that all sports fans in the country will always remember her legacy.
Uhuru also described Wanja as a trailblazer in Kenyan sports who inspired countless young athletes through her exceptional talent, dedication, and leadership on and off the court.
“Janet Wanja was not just a great athlete; she was a symbol of strength, hard work, and commitment. Her story motivated many young players, and her legacy will always be remembered by sports fans across the country,” Uhuru said.
Sports void
Uhuru equally hailed Wanja’s contributions to the Malkia Strikers, which significantly elevated Kenya’s profile on the international volleyball stage, noting that her absence leaves a void that will be deeply felt.
“To her family and the sports community, may the Almighty God give you strength and comfort during this tough time of grief. Janet’s inspiring life reminds us to always aim for excellence in everything we do,” he noted.
“Janet Wanja will always be remembered as one of Kenya’s best volleyball players. Her talent and success brought light and hope to the whole country. May she rest in eternal peace.”
Wanja joined the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) in 2023 as the women’s trainer on the technical bench after replacing Paul Gitau who previously held the position.
Best setter in volleyball
Renowned as one of the best setters in the country, Wanja succumbed on Friday, December 27, 2024, to gallbladder cancer after a long battle with the illness.
Her untimely death was announced by the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), where she operated for the last two decades.
“The Kenya Volleyball Federation is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved star, iconic veteran setter Janet Wanja Mungai, after a courageous battle with Gall Bladder Cancer.” KVF President Charles Nyaberi stated.
The volleyball star was mourned by President William Ruto who described her as a hardworking and focused individual.
“Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honour and dedication. She was focused, hardworking and a team player. May it be comfort to her family, friends and the wider sports fraternity that we are praying for them at this tough and difficult time. One day, we will beat cancer. Rest in Peace, Wanja,” Ruto stated.
