Student dies during the Kenyatta University varsity games
With the 10th All-Africa varsity games currently up and running at Kenyatta University, sad scenes were witnessed when a student died mid-game.
The 20-year-old student from America University of Cairo collapsed during his side's clash with United States International University of Africa (USIU) at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Indoor Arena.
The player who since the tragic incident has had his full name protected by authorities until family members are briefed of the heart wrenching news dropped on the court.
The 20-year-old student passed away at the nearby Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital after frantic attempts of resuscitation were initiated. The death was then confirmed by Kasarani police boss Peter Mwanzo who stated that the student died while they were playing and efforts to resuscitate him were not successful.
Mwanzo said the Egyptian Embassy was informed about the issue and it is now their duty to proceed with the matter at hand. "During the game, the young man jumped and fell on his back. It is believed he sustained injuries on his head. The paramedics who were around then swung into action and rushed him to Ruaraka Uhai Neema Hospital where doctors did their best but unfortunately, he died."
Mwanzo added that plans are underway in conjunction with the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya to transport the body via Egypt Air later Friday for the final rights back at home.
Police Spokesman Bruno Shioso, while also confirming the incident said: “It’s an act of God. The boy was playing basketball and he just fell and collapsed, he was rushed to the hospital where they tried to resuscitate him, but it couldn’t work. The incident happened in the morning around 11am.”

In the basketball games, Kenyatta University lost 77-74 to Johannesburg University in the men’s basketball final.
So far, more than 40 universities have participated in the continental event which lasts 5 days. Elsewhere, hosts Kenyatta University (KU) edged Makerere Business School (MUBS) 2-1 to clinch gold in the hotly contested men’s football final yesterday June 10.
Benjamin Nazar broke the deadlock in the 26th minute to give MUBS 1-0 lead to the breather. The hosts resumed the second half strongly with David Krop snatching an equaliser in the 62nd minute following a goal mouth melee. Billy Clinton then scored a last-gasp winner to secure KU's place in next year's World University Games in China.
