Shabana leave it late to pick first point, Bandari pip Sofapaka

Shabana FC secured their first point in the top-tier league with a late equalizer, resulting in a 1-1 draw against FC Talanta in a match held at Nyayo Stadium on Friday.

The Kisii-based team had suffered defeats in their previous home game played at Raila Odinga Stadium the weekend before.

In this encounter, they faced Talanta, a team that had previously held AFC Leopards to a goalless draw in their last match.

Fans turned out in numbers to support Shabana FC, hoping to witness their first victory in the top tier after earning promotion during the 2022/23 National Super League season.

The game remained goalless until the 90th minute when Talanta took advantage of an error by Shabana’s goalkeeper, Eric Ongiri, and scored the opening goal courtesy of Kevintom Machika.

With this late goal, Talanta believed they had secured maximum points from the match.

However, just four minutes later, Shabana managed to equalize through a goal by Justine Omwando, who converted a free-kick opportunity, earning them a valuable point from the encounter.

Omwando’s performance and goal earned him the title of the match’s Man of the Match.

In another league fixture, Bandari FC handed Sofapaka FC their first loss of the season.

Umaru Kasumba, a former Sofapaka player, scored for Bandari FC in the first minute, and they successfully defended their lead to secure maximum points.
