Selebwa: Here’s what Shabana FC’s promotion to FKF PL means

By , June 19, 2023

Former AFC Leopards coach Gilbert Selebwa believes Shabana FC’s promotion to FKF Premier League will impact the league, players as well as the Gusii community positively.

Shabana FC have finally achieved promotion to the FKF Premier League. Selebwa, who played a pivotal role in resurrecting and coaching the team in between 2013-2018, couldn’t be happier to witness the success of one of his projects.

Challenging route

Shabana FC’s journey to the top tier has been a challenging one, marred by the disagreements between FKF and the Kenya Premier League, as well as controversies surrounding the league’s operations.

Back in 2015 while he was in charge, Shabana missed out on promotion when the Kenya Premier League refused to admit second-tier teams, leading to frustration and disappointment for the club and its supporters.

However, after nearly a decade, their hard work and determination have finally paid off, and Selebwa believes this achievement will have a profound impact on both the league and the Gusii community.

According to Selebwa, Shabana FC’s passionate and devoted fan base will bring a significant increase in overall attendance and support for the league.

Shabana crowd puller

The club’s ability to draw large crowds and engage their loyal fans will create a vibrant atmosphere during matches, further enhancing the league’s overall appeal and possibly propelling the team to even greater success.

“I started the Shabana project, and their promotion means a lot. With a large following and passionate travelling fans, their ability to pull crowds is crucial for the league’s atmosphere and the team’s success,” he told People Daily Digital.

Selebwa added that Shabana’s promotion will provide talented players from the Nyanza region with a local platform to showcase their skills.

In the absence of a serious team from the area, many gifted players were compelled to seek opportunities elsewhere.

However, with Shabana’s emergence in the top tier, these talented individuals will now have a team they can proudly represent, leading to the discovery and development of more footballing talents from the Nyanza and Gusii communities.

“With Shabana’s entrance, talented players from the region now have a team, allowing them to showcase their skills and uncover more local talents,” he noted.

Selebwa’s optimism extends beyond the pitch, as he believes that Shabana FC’s promotion will bring about positive economic transformations in the region.

“The influx of visiting teams, such as powerhouses Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, for matches in the Gusii region is expected to have a significant impact on local businesses, particularly the hospitality sector,” he stated.

This surge in economic activity has the potential to boost the overall economy of the region, benefiting various stakeholders.

“Hosting clubs like Gor Mahia or AFC Leopards in Kisii would have a significant impact on local businesses such as hotels, thus boosting the regional economy,” he added.

Push infrastructure

Selebwa who has also made his name in football commentary and analysis anticipates that the demand for improved infrastructure will arise.

The need for a better stadium capable of hosting international matches may push local authorities, including the county’s governor, to invest in upgrading sports facilities, providing a lasting legacy for the community.

“Furthermore, the increased crowd attendance can motivate the Governor to invest in stadium improvements, paving the way for hosting international matches,” he concluded.

He is also confident that with several successful business people in the region, the side will be able to land sponsors to fund their operation.
