Ruto congratulates David Munyua on historic darts win
By Faith Lagat, December 19, 2025In a moment that has stirred national pride, President William Ruto has celebrated David Munyua’s stunning victory at the 2025/26 Paddy Power World Darts Championship.
The 30-year-old veterinarian from Murang’a made history on December 18, 2025, becoming the first Kenyan to compete and win a match at the prestigious event held at London’s Alexandra Palace.
Munyua, making his tournament debut, caused one of the biggest upsets by defeating world No. 18 and former World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker of Belgium 3-2. Trailing 2-0 in sets, Munyua survived three match darts in the fourth set to level at 2-2 before securing the decider with a 135 checkout. His performance showcased remarkable composure and skill, earning him praise both locally and internationally.
President Ruto took to X on December 19, 2025, to commend the achievement: “Congratulations David Munyua on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship,”
“By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history. You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage. As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home.”

Historic win inspires Kenyan youth
Munyua, who qualified through the African Darts Group while balancing a full-time veterinary career, described the victory as overwhelming. “That was crazy; it’s too much to express right now. I did not expect it, but I’m so excited to have won,” he said.
“Being the first Kenyan to play at the World Championship, I’ve never been in this kind of a venue before with the noise and the pressure. Everyone back in my country is going crazy about it. It is a special feeling for me and players back in my country.” He added, “This is amazing… a very big moment for the sport, for Africa, and for Kenya.”
