Opposition leader Raila Odinga has called for increased support for community football clubs in the country.

Odinga, a passionate supporter of Gor Mahia, expressed his admiration for the team's 20th league title victory and urged fans to rally behind community teams.

Shabana's promotion to the top tier adds to the existing community clubs Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards in the league.

Their entry is expected to add spice to the league and increase the following of the FKF Premier League as they have a large following in Gusii.

In a congratulatory message to Gor Mahia, Odinga hailed their achievement as a wonderful milestone. He emphasized the importance of backing community football clubs and providing them with the support they deserve.

"Congratulations to Gor Mahia on their 20th League title, a wonderful achievement! Bravo! It's high time we all rally behind community football clubs and give them the support they deserve," Odinga stated.

As a show of appreciation for Gor Mahia's success, Odinga awarded the team a prize of 1.5 million Kenyan shillings.

This victory secures Gor Mahia's return to the CAF Champions League, a prestigious tournament for African football clubs.

Gor Mahia's path to victory was marked by a remarkable comeback in their final match, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to secure a convincing 4-1 win.

Goals from Benson Omala, Peter Lwasa, Austin Odhiambo, and Alpha Onyango sealed their triumph, allowing Gor Mahia to clinch the title ahead of Tusker FC.

Gor Mahia managed 70 points in 34 matches following 20 wins, 10 draws and four losses in the entire campaign.

They scored 53 goals ending the season as the second-best offensive side behind Police FC who netted 57 goals.

Their defence conceded 22 goals, making them the joint meanest defence with Police FC. The club has been cleared to feature in the Champion League.

Gor Kakamega Homeboyz, and Tusker received a huge boost after the Football Kenya Federation’s First Instance Body (FIB)  granted them licenses to feature in CAF football next season.

The three top-tier clubs have been given the licenses after they met the CAF club licensing requirements. The three clubs are the ones that stand a chance to take part in the Champions League and Confederation Cup in the 2023–24 season.

The power to approve or reject the application for licenses of any club lies with the First Instance Body (FIB), which is an independent decision-making committee set up by all of CAF’s member associations to review clubs’ license applications.

Five clubs were invited by FKF to apply for club licensing after a CAF circular was issued earlier this month regarding the club licensing process and requisite criteria.

The top four FKF Premier League clubs as well as the finalists of the FKF Cup Competition are the clubs that were invited.

The clubs were required to make their applications and present documents that adhere to five-pillar criteria: sporting, infrastructure, personnel, administrative, legal, and financial.

The 2023/24 CAF Champions League will be the 60th edition of Africa's premier club football tournament organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and the 28th edition under the current CAF Champions League title.

The winners of the 2023/24 CAF Champions League will automatically qualify for the 2024/25 CAF Champions League and earn the right to play against the winners of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup in the 2024 CAF Super Cup.

While there is no official news yet, some media pointed out that the format of the competition will change starting the 2023–24 season due to CAF's newest competition, the Africa Super League.
