Ongare punching hard ahead of Kinshasa boxing contest

Olympian Christine Ongare is anxious to improve on her performance during the upcoming Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championship in Kinshasa, DR Congo from 3rd to 11th of April.
After the Kinshasa extravaganza, Ongare will be making a trip to Istanbul, Turkey for the AIBA World Women’s Boxing Championship primed for May.
But first, the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist says she aims to bag a gold medal at the Zone 3 Championship.
This she says will make the national anthem played on the international stage and is a dream she relishes.
“Thankfully we have been training well even though we had lost a little bit of quality but now we are thankful because we have started to get back to our highest standards.
Overall, everything is going on well but we can’t say we have reached 100 per cent level as we continue to prepare for the Zone 3 Championships. The last time I came home with a silver medal, I missed gold because of an eye injury,” Ongare said
She added: “I believe what is remaining now is getting a gold medal because I have three bronze medals and silver so only the gold medal is missing in my closet.
I want to fulfill my dream which is to hear the Kenyan national anthem being played for me.” The pugilist, who plies her trade with Kenya Police, has been busy sharpening her skills at Kariobangi Social Hall gymnasium where she also traces her roots.
Ongare, who made the Hit Squad quartet that flew the country’s flag at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will have an opportunity to gauge her preparedness at next month’s Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championship before making her trip to Turkey.
