Olympian Akinyi eyes gold at global showpiece
By Harrison.Kivisu, April 13, 2023Olympian Milka Akinyi is optimistic of winning a gold medal for the country at the World Tae-kwo-ndo championship slated for next month in Azerbaijan.
Akinyi who has a black belt, is confident of flying the Kenyan flag high, expressing optimism that Team Kenya will perform exemplary, after a very competitive squad selection.
“I’m happy to be among the players who will represent Kenya in Azerbaijan. It has been a tough journey but finally it’s now a reality that I will be presenting my country at the world championship,” said Akinyi.
Speaking to People Sport during the Easter Tae-kwo-ndo championship in Mombasa, Akinyi sent a warning to opponents that they should not expect an easy ride against her.
“We are ready to put up a brave show, personally I want to promise my country gold because I have prepared well and the spirit is high,” she said.
Kenya Tae-kwo-ndo Federation Secretary General George Wesonga confirmed that the Mombasa event was successful and was used to select a team to represent Kenya in the global event slated for May 2023. The national taekwondo team is set to begin full residential training this week in preparation for the World Championship and the Africa Games.
“We have hopes that we will do well in the world championships, the Mombasa competition was competitive and we managed to get good players who will represent us,” said Wesonga adding that a total of 16 players including 8 men and 8 women will form the national team.
