Nyandarua North triumphs

Nyandarua North dominated the Nyandarua County secondary schools’ athletics championships held at the Nyahururu Stadium over the weekend.

This was part of the first term games which also comprised basketball and handball competitions.

The competition was held in Nyahururu Town, Laikipia, since Nyandarua lacks a standard stadium.

Nyandarua’s Ol Kalou Stadium has remained incomplete for about 10 years.

William Kimosop and Calvin Muthii from Irigithathi Secondary School ensured Nyandarua North sub-county came in position one and two in the boys 10,000m in 32:00.1 and 32:05.0 respectively.

Josephat Ngigi from Githima Secondary in Mirangine sub-county secured position three after timing 33:15.0. In the girls category, Margaret Wanjiru of Kabaa Secondary (Nyandarua North) outsmarted Tabitha Njambi from Ragia Secondary (Kinangop) and Alice Macharia from Gathanji Secondary (Gathanji sub county) after clocking 37:45.0.

Njambi and Macharia came in second and third positions timing 37:50.0 and 38:00.1 respectively.

Marieta Wanjiku (Karagoine Secondary), Miriam Wangui (Mwihoti Secondary) and Veronica Wanjiru (Mikaru Secondary), of Nyandarua North, Nyandarua Central and Nyandarua South sub-counties respectively, finished in that order in the girls’ 5,000m timing 18:17.0, 18:20.0 and 18:22.0.

Julius Letekei of Irigithathi Secondary won the boys 5000m in 15:15.0.

Behind him were David Ndichu from Malewa Secondary in Kipipiri coming in second in 15:17.0 and Anthony Kimani from Karagoini Secondary, Nyandarua North, in 15:17.2.

Mirangine sub-county registered its second win after Cecilia Njeri from Nyaituga Secondary clinched the girls’ 3000m title in 11:26.8.

Behind her were Brenda Wanjiku from Mihuti Secondary (Nyandarua Central) and Tabitha Njeri (Mutamayu Secondary, Kinangop) who finished in 11:42.0 and 11:48.0 in that order.

Ibrahim Kipruto and Paul Njoroge, both from Irigithathi Secondary, finished position one and two in the 3000m clocking 9:15 and 9:23 respectively.

Coming in third was James Njoroge from Simbara secondary in 9:25.In the finals of the boys’ handball tournament, Leshau Boys Secondary beat Graceland 9-7 to be the new champions whereas in the girls’ handball finale, Shamata Secondary beat Sasumwa 9-1 to become the new county queens.

Karima Girls Secondary also beat Magomano Secondary 67-26 in the basketball final.
