Nyakach Girls reigned supreme at the Kisumu County Secondary Schools Term Two ball games after clinching five gold medals across different sports disciplines, while Onjiko High School cemented their dominance in boys’ 3×3 basketball by winning the title for a third consecutive year.

According to the final overall results released on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, by the county’s competitions secretary, George Osura and shared with People Sports, Nyakach emerged champions in girls’ football, 3×3 basketball, rugby 7s, volleyball and netball.

In girls’ football, Nyakach Girls (popularly known as the Plateau Queens in Nyakach sub-county and across Kisumu County) retained their title after edging out Kudho Mixed Secondary 1-0.

The winning goal came from Joan Agola, sealing the victory under the guidance of head coach Crispine Odindo and earning the team a ticket to the Nyanza Regional Secondary Schools ball games set for July 8-12 in Kisumu City.

Nyakach had earlier stormed into the final after thrashing Ndiru Secondary 5-0 in the semis.

Kudho had beaten Ahero Girls 2-0 in the other semi-final before narrowly losing to the Plateau Queens in the title decider.

Coach Odindo told People Sports, “Though we lost eight key players from our starting line-up who completed Form Four last year, we still have a strong squad. God willing, we aim to qualify for the East Africa schools girls’ football final.”

The players who exited the team after last year’s East Africa Secondary Schools Games in Mbale, Uganda, include custodian Mercy Akoth, defenders Irene Wandera, Aisha Akinyi, and Lorrine Akinyi; midfielders Christine Adhiambo, Morrine Eseri, and Mercelline Awino; and striker Swaumu Masunngo.

In 3×3 girls’ basketball, Nyakach Girls (coached by Kevin Otuoma) bagged gold after comfortably beating St. Barnabas 18-6 in the final held at Kisumu Girls High School. They had earlier outclassed Koru 16-1 in the semi-finals, while St. Barnabas edged Katolo Mixed 10-8 to reach the final.

Nyakach also cruised to gold in girls’ volleyball, sweeping aside Koru Girls 3-0 in the final, and added another gold in girls’ netball after a commanding 59-33 win over Ngere Kagoro.

In the girls’ rugby 7s final, also coached by Kevin Otuoma, Nyakach edged out a resilient Sigoti Secondary 3-0 in post-match penalties following a 19-19 draw in regulation time and a goalless extra period.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ competition, Onjiko High School thrashed Maseno School 21-5 in the 3×3 basketball final to win gold and retain the title for a third straight year.

They added a second gold medal in boys’ volleyball after overpowering Obambo Secondary 3-0 at Kisumu Boys Sportsground.
