Now Senate summons CS Amina after failing to honour another invitation

A senate committee has summoned Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohammed for failing to appear before the panel for the second time.

The CS was been invited to appear before the Labour and Social Welfare Committee on yesterday to explain the decision to order for an audit of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) accounts. She was also expected to explain a number of questions in relation to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and expenditure of funds received by the ministry from the Sports Fund.

However, Amina failed to show up and instead, sent a letter to speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Tuesday, seeking postponement of the meeting by seven days.

In her letter, the CS said she was scheduled to receive the FKF inspection report on the same day thus needed time to scrutinise and understand the contents of the report before she appears before the panel.

“It will therefore be more prudent to have the meeting after the report has been officially received and can be shared with the esteemed committee,” the letter reads in part.

The letter and the CS’s no show triggered bitter reaction from the members of the committee chaired by Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja.

They accused the CS treating the committee, and Parliament in general, with contempt.

Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot said the CS was treating Senate with contempt for not honouring their invitation and called for her summoning in less than seven days.

Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika echoed the centiments and called for stiffer penalties for government officials who ignored senate invites because it was setting bad presidence yet the house acted as representatives of the public.

“I want to direct as follows; that summons be issued to CS Amina Mohammed to appear before this committee on Tuesday at 10am,” Sakaja said.
