Njoroge Kibugu: 18-year-old golf protégé turned Kenya’s last man standing at Kenya Open

By , March 6, 2022

Might this just be the point at which Kenyans are witnessing a legend in the making? Well, many have already pinned a couple of similarities to golf great Tiger Woods, branding him the ‘Kenyan Tiger’.

For Young Turk Kibugu Njoroge, this is definitely a dream come true now being the only Kenyan left in the Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship.

The 18-year old golfer who plies his trade at Muthaiga Country Club surprisingly began the sport at age 6. Since then, Njoroge certainly hasn’t wavered his focus away from being amongst the best.

During an interview after Day 2 of the championship, Njoroge was entirely firm on what his game plan has always been. “Making the cut wasn’t the goal at all, being in contention was the plan heading into the championship,” Njoroge said.

With Day 3 done and dusted, his impressive feat has now seen him receiving a token of appreciation worth Ksh1 million from Kenya Vision 2030. “I’m ready to go out there and fight. Just enjoying the moment, being in the moment and staying in the moment,” Njoroge added.

On Day 3, Kibugu Njoroge managed to finish off with 4 boogies on holes number 7, 11, 14, 16 and a birdie on hole 18 to record 2 over par at the par. The 18-year-old lad had three bogeys on the back nine before his late flourish. He is joint 33rd on the standings.

Indeed the Magical Kenya Open is an eye-opener of what we really expect in the future and the kind of talents we have, Njoroge being one of them and certainly a gem in the sport.

Njoroge’s last day sees him tee off at 9:48 am. You certainly don’t want to miss out on this rising sensation.
