Naivas FC eye first-ever Premier League spot as Rangers cling to survival

By , June 26, 2025

The final Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League ticket for the 2025/26 season will be decided in a high-stakes two-legged playoff between FKF-Premier League side Posta Rangers and National Super League contenders Naivas FC.

Having finished 16th with 35 points in the FKF Premier League standings, Posta Rangers are fighting to preserve their top-flight status, while Naivas, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion after finishing third with 62 points in the National Super League, are hoping to finally secure a long-awaited leap into the top tier.

This is not Naivas’ first brush with the playoffs. In the 2023/24 season, they came agonisingly close to promotion but were edged out by Sofapaka, who retained their Premier League spot.

Now, a year later, Naivas return to the same stage more experienced, more determined, and with everything to play for.

Naivas forward Kharisa Ponda is confident that they will beat the mailmen to the top-flight ticket. “Last time out, we were punished by our own mistakes,” said Ponda.

“This time, we are keen on limiting errors and making the most of even the half-chances we get. That tactical discipline will be crucial against a solid, seasoned team like Rangers.”

He concluded: “In life, opportunities like these don’t come often. We are lucky and favoured to be here again, and we are determined to seize it. The goal is simple: win both legs and earn promotion.”

For Posta Rangers, the playoff is a final lifeline, a chance to salvage their top-flight status after a turbulent season. While they showed glimpses of quality, a lack of consistency dragged them into danger.

They edged into the playoff spot only by virtue of a superior goal tally over FC Talanta. Now, with everything on the line, they’ll need to lean on their Premier League experience and deliver over two crucial legs to secure their survival.

If the aggregate score is tied after regular time in the second match, the team with the greater number of away goals will be declared the winner.

However, if the teams are tied on both aggregate and away goals, the match will proceed to penalties. The winner of the shootout will claim a place in the 2025/26 FKF-Premier League.

The winner over two legs will join newly promoted Nairobi United and APS Bomet in next season’s FKF Premier League. For Posta Rangers, it’s about hanging on to their top-tier place.

For Naivas, it could mark a breakthrough moment and their first-ever promotion to the top flight.

The first leg is set for Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Machakos Stadium, where Naivas will host the tie.

The return leg will follow on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at SportPesa Arena in Murang’a, with Posta Rangers as the home team.

Kick-off for both matches is set for 3 pm.
