Mwamba beats Impala to win inaugural women Kenya

By , March 21, 2022

Mwamba Women’s Rugby team is the inaugural Kenya Cup Women’s league champions thanks to an explosive start on away grounds to upset Impala’s unbeaten record with a 15-11 shocker.

They now enter history books as the first women’s team to win the Kenya Cup title which places the side at par with their male counterparts who also have one title (1983).   Kenyan international Janet Okello drew first blood with a try that inspired her teammates and moments later, fellow international Terry Ayiesa doubled their lead to 10-3 before Diana Omosso shoved her way into the try box for their third try that gave the visitors a short-lived 15-6 lead that was moments later cut down to 15-11 through a converted try by the hosts who kicked off by sinking into the heavy pressure from Kulabu’s forwards.

Mwamba’s dependable winger Janet Okello was proud of how her side was focused on delivering a trophy that will shape up things at the club as she called out for sponsors not to neglect the Women’s game.

“Despite all the challenges including the Corona Virus and commitment to training during hard times without even a home ground, we are happy we have finally won the league.”
