Mixed fortunes in FKF Premier League
Gor Mahia are almost certain of winning their 20th Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title after a merited 2-0 win over Ulinzi Stars at Kasarani Annex yesterday.
The jigsaw puzzle in the title chase continued after Tusker shockingly fell 2-1 to relegation-fighting Wazito in Muhoroni thus losing the league leadership to Gor who now enjoy a four-point advantage over them going into the final stretch of the campaign.
During a physical match that was played before a sparse crowd, Gor overpowered Ulinzi in a result that saw them reclaim the top spot that they had relinquished to Tusker for almost two weeks.
For Tusker, they fell to a gritty Wazito in an outcome that gave Ko-galo the advantage of reclaiming the title pending the remaining matches against Kakamega Homeboyz and Nairobi City Stars.
In Kasarani, it was great afternoon for K’ogalo as former AFC Leopards midfield dynamo Austin Odhiambo scored two goals in quick succession in the 3rd and 9th minutes respectively to knock the winds out of the sails of Ulinzi who remained in the eighth position with 45 points from 31 matches played.
Gor Mahia coach Jonathan Mckinstry was delighted by the team’s win, saying that the team is determined to put Tusker bumper to bumper in the title chase.
“These are the results of hard work and now that we have ascended at the top, we have to work to maintain the position. Really, it has been tough but winning the league is within our sight but let’s cross the bridge when we reach there,” said McKinstry.
In Muhori, Wazito FC FC frustrated Tusker for a long period after snatching the opening goal through Collins Neto in the 14th minute before the league’s cup holders replied through former international defender Charkles Monayi in the 78th minute,
At Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega, hosts Kakamega Homeboyz atoned for their earlier loss at the hands of FC Talanta to edge out Mathare United.
Both teams traded powerful shots at goal from the onset before Brian Munyendo found an opening inside Mathare’s defense in the 40th to slam the ball at the back of the net during which time the ‘slum boys’ defenders were dashing to clear their lines.
However, the shocker came in the form of AFC Leopards losing 2-1 to relegation-haunted Vihiga Bullets at Mumias Complex.
Leopards, who had lost 2-1 to Nairobi City Stars prior to the clash, had no answer to Bullets’ two goals within a six-minute burst before Cliff Nyakeya reduced the arrears for the big cats almost at the first half stoppage time.
At Nyayo Stadium, Elvis Rupia once again turned Kenya Police FC hero as he notched a brace before Marvin Nabwire added the icing on the cake with the third goal in a 3-1 win over Posta Rangers.
