Ministry officially opens term two school games

The Director General for Basic Education Elyas Abdi has officially opened the 2025 term two National School Games, which are expected to bring together at least 5,300 learners.

According to the Ministry of Education, the games, which were officially launched on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, in Kakamega County, will also see at least 1000 teachers from across various parts of the country participate.

While speaking during the official opening of the term two school games, the Director General highlighted how important school games are while noting that football games are where future champions are nurtured.

“School games are where future champions are nurtured,” he said.

Similarly, the education boss also emphasised digital registration of participants via the Kenya Education Management Information System (KEMIS) to ensure fair play.

He also acknowledged how important it is to have genuine sportsmanship where true talent and effort are upheld.

“Verification will foster genuine sportsmanship where success is earned through true talent and effort,” he said.

On the other hand, while addressing rising legal disputes, Abdi urged schools to utilise existing grievance resolution mechanisms. “The trend of initiating legal action is counterproductive. Let us resolve disputes amicably,” Abdi said.

The DG was joined by several leaders, among them the Deputy Governor of Kisumu County and the County Executive Committee Member of Sports in Kakamega County.

Games venue

Meanwhile, according to the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSSA), the term two national games will be held in Kakamega County from July 29 and are expected to end on the 2nd of August 2025. 

Likewise, according to the Ministry of Education, Kakamega High School will be hosting the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) term two games.

Also, the Education Principal Secretary, Julius Bitok, had noted that the games were previously scheduled for Nakuru High School; however, they were later moved to Kakamega.

In addition, the East African Games will also be held in Kakamega, and according to KSSSA, the games are expected to start on August 14, 2025.

The term two games will feature football, volleyball, rugby sevens (boys and girls), badminton, table tennis, and basketball 3×3.
