Midfield maestros return as McCarthy names Harambee Stars’ starting XI for Zambia duel

By , August 17, 2025

Kenya’s Harambee Stars have unveiled their starting lineup for their final Group A game at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), on Sunday, August 17, 2025, with key returns headlining coach Benni McCarthy’s selection.

Midfield playmaker Austin Odhiambo and captain Abud Omar are back in the starting eleven after sitting out the Morocco clash, where McCarthy had opted for heavy rotations. Their inclusion signals a return to balance and leadership as Kenya seek to close out the group stage on a high against Zambia this afternoon at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Abud resumes his familiar role, leading a backline that also features Mike Kibwage, Sylvester Owino, and Lewis Bandi. His presence not only strengthens the defence but also adds attacking width, with his overlapping runs expected to trouble the Chipolopolo’s right flank.

Midfield trio boost Stars

In midfield, Austin’s creativity is a major boost for the Stars. He will link play alongside Marvin Nabwire and Alpha Onyango, while Ben Stanley supports from the centre. Nabwire returns after red, Alpha Onyango also gets to start after missing previous match as well as Austin

The forward line sees Ryan Ogam and David Sakwa paired to provide pace and penetration in attack. Behind them, Shikhalo starts in goal, entrusted with marshalling the defence and maintaining composure from the back.

Notably, some regular starters remain on the bench, with Daniel Sakari, Boniface Muchiri, Masoud Juma, and Byrne Omondi among the substitutes, underlining the depth and flexibility McCarthy has at his disposal.

The coach stressed that the changes were both tactical and strategic.

Kenya have already secured a place in the quarter-finals after collecting seven points from their first three matches. A win against Zambia, who are already eliminated, would cement top spot with 10 points and ensure the Stars avoid a possible quarter-final clash against neighbours Tanzania.

Kick-off is at 3:00 pm, with a full house expected at Kasarani to cheer the Stars as they chase history in their debut CHAN appearance.
