Mean Machine crush Wasps

By , February 8, 2021

With just a match away from returning to the Kenya Cup League, Mean Machine are hopeful of going past Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega this coming Saturday in a promotion playoff semis clash.

The weekend will also see Strathmore University host Suburbs in the other promotion clash.

Despite Cruising 37-0 past Egerton Wasps on Saturday, Mean Machine coach Nick Abok insists this was not their best display.

According to Abok,  there were a couple of missed scoring opportunities and wrong decisions that denied them the chance to score half a century.

Mean Machine has been training under the tutelage of coaching trio of Ramsfield Matekwa, Nick Abok and Phelim Kidakwa.

“Given the short period of time, we now need to recover and  fine tune a few areas to maximise on our strengths going into the big one,” defensive coach Abok told People Sport.

Coach Matekwa will be in Kakamega for the all-important clash this Saturday where the new Kenya Cup promoted side will be known after 80 minutes.

“This will not be our first playoff semis, so we are under no pressure but we take no opponent as a pushover.

We were bound to score more points against Egerton and that is a positive despite failing to convert several opportunities.

Heading into Kakamega, we have just a few arrears to touch on,” said Matekwa.

Machine won the match courtesy of four tries, a conversion and five penalties, had two cancelled tries.

Two tries by returning hooker Grevis Onyino and winger Lawrence Ndungu, and three penalties by Trevor Asina and Festus Safari saw Machine head into half time leading 19-0.

The second period was also a one sided affair with Marvin Karungi and Bruce Odhiambo scoring a try each. Fullback Asina also drilled in two penalties while Safari converted one try.
