Mathare United suspend 4 players for taking part in unsanctioned tournament

Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Mathare United has suspended four players who took part in an unsanctioned match.

The suspended stars are Kevin Kimani and Ellie Asieche, two of the most experienced players at the club, as well as Brian Ouru and Eric Mulu.

They have been suspended for two weeks, the club said on Wednesday, October 29, 2024.

“The club has taken disciplinary action against four players, suspending them with immediate effect for two weeks without pay for breach of contract. They are Kevin Kimani, Elli Asieche, Brian Ouru, and Eric Mulu.

“The four were involved in an unsanctioned match/tournament just days before our matchday six league encounter with Police FC without the knowledge of the club,” Mathare United said.

According to the club, the players broke clauses in their contracts, and that is why they have taken the decision to suspend them.

“By doing so, they broke several clauses in their contracts, one being that a player ‘should  maintain a high standard of physical fitness at all times and not to indulge in any sport, activity, or practice that might endanger their fitness.’

 “There will be no further communication from the club or any of its members regarding this decision,” the Slum Boys added.

The four players took part in a game that involved A Mosquito FC and Team Zied, both non-league teams, where the match ended in a 5-5 draw.

Meanwhile, A Mosquito FC released their statement defending themselves against criticism as some players from top-tier clubs featured for them.

According to A Mosquito FC, players who featured for them did so out of their own volition and as individuals.

“Following recent discussions after yesterday’s KPL game, A Mosquito FC would like to clarify some opinions that have surfaced. Our goal is to foster a positive and engaging football culture, sparking meaningful conversations around the game we all love.

“A Mosquito FC is not a tournament-focused team. Our members attend matches to support the sport, connect with fans, and enjoy the atmosphere in their personal capacity. For us, football is more than just competition—it’s about bringing people together to share a passion that creates lasting friendships, connections, and community bonds.

“Our players join these events as individuals, looking to network and be part of the game they love. As a collective, we believe football is a unique platform for personal growth, where our members can develop life skills and strengthen relationships both on and off the pitch.

“Let’s keep the conversation going about what football means to us as a community and as a culture. We value each and every fan, and together, we celebrate a sport that continues to inspire us all,” a statement released on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, said.

Gor Mahia’s fans also raised concerns as some of their players featured in the unsanctioned match. The criticism increased, especially after the reigning Premier League champions lost the subsequent match against Nairobi City Stars, their first defeat of the season.

The club has, however, not released a statement confirming their stance and action that will be taken against the players.
