Mashemeji Derby: Dan Sserunkuma and Gor Mahia’s standout stars against AFC Leopards

By , December 3, 2025

Whenever Gor Mahia meets AFC Leopards, the stage is set for one of the most intense rivalries in East African football as the two Kenyan Premier League heavyweights lock horns on Sunday, December 7, 2025, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The Mashemeji Derby is never short of pressure, an arena where even the most gifted forwards often struggle to produce magic as Kenya’s most decorated football clubs face off.

Stealing the show!

But over the years, a select group of K’Ogalo players has handled the heat and delivered multiple goals in a single clash, performances that remain unforgettable in the fixture’s history.

William Ouma ‘Chege’ – Brace ( May 5, 1968)

A flamboyant early icon of the club, Chege lit up the very first Mashemeji Derby by scoring both goals in a 2–0 win. Even though part of his season was disrupted by a jail term over an assault case, he still finished with 19 goals—proof of his exceptional talent.

Laban Otieno – Hat-trick (February 22, 1975)

Signed to fill the gap left by players who departed for Luo Union in 1974, Laban wasted no time winning over the supporters. After striking 18 goals in his debut campaign, he wrote his name into derby folklore by scoring the only hat-trick ever registered in this rivalry, inspiring a 5–1 demolition of AFC Leopards.

Allan Thigo – Brace ( October 2, 1976, FA Cup)

During the season of Gor Mahia’s unbeaten league run, Thigo kept hopes of a league-and-cup double alive. His two goals helped secure a dominant 4–1 victory over Abaluhya in the Challenger’s Cup opening round. K’Ogalo progressed past GEMA FC and Nyundo FC before eventually bowing out to Luo Union in a semifinal replay.

William Obwaka – Brace (January 27, 1985, CECAFA Final)

This performance borders on mythical.
With several key players suspended after the Zamalek incident, Gor entered the CECAFA final as clear underdogs. But Obwaka, then a University of Nairobi medical student, took charge, scoring twice in a 2–0 triumph in Khartoum. His heroics secured the regional title and elevated him to legendary status.

Sammy Onyango ‘Jogoo’ – Brace ( August 2, 1986)

Jogoo, the club’s all-time leading scorer and the player with the most goals in derby history, struck twice to give Gor a 2–0 halftime advantage at City Stadium. Leopards mounted a comeback to win 3–2, but Jogoo’s influence on the rivalry remains unmatched.

Hezron Osuka – Brace (March 5, 1988, League)

Coming off Gor’s historic treble in 1987, Osuka made an instant statement. During a series of postponed league fixtures, the new signing netted two goals in a 2–2 draw, his perfect introduction to derby football.

Dan Sserunkuma – Brace (September 24, 2012)

After 43 derbies without a Gor Mahia player scoring twice, Sserunkuma ended the drought. The mid-season arrival sparked a dramatic title push, and his double in a 2–1 victory helped K’Ogalo leapfrog Leopards in the table. He finished with six league goals against AFC, a tally only equalled by Jogoo.

Two years later, Danny did it again.

His two goals earned a crucial 2–2 draw, points that proved vital in a season that ended with Gor Mahia lifting the league title. It was his final derby contribution before departing the club, much to the relief of Leopards fans.

Nicholas Kipkirui – Brace (May 19, 2019)

“Kip” had already delivered in high-pressure matches, including continental competitions, but his double in a 3–1 derby win strengthened his connection with the Gor faithful. It was the kind of performance that shapes future club heroes.

Gnamien Gislain Yipké – Brace (November 10, 2019)

Though his stint at the club was a mixed bag, the Ivorian shone brilliantly on this derby afternoon. His two goals powered Gor Mahia to a commanding 4–1 win, the second-largest victory margin in the history of the rivalry.

Benson Omalla – Brace (October 7, 2023)

One of the most prolific strikers to don the green and white, Omalla left with 52 goals for the club and a record-breaking 26 league goals in a single season. His derby brace in a 2–0 win was especially sweet, coming immediately after Gor suffered their first derby loss in 13 meetings.
