Mara Sugar saw off rivals Mathare United to claim the National Super League title for the 2023/24 season.

The Sugar Millers and the Slum Boys have already earned promotions to the Football Kenya Federation Premier League, and the title was the only remaining battle in the second tier between them. With a game left, Mara Sugar are at the top of the table and have earned double joy by beating the 2008 Premier League winners to the title.

Although they failed to win the NSL title, Mathare United should at least breathe a sigh of relief at getting back into the top tier after just one season in the second division.

Meanwhile, Mara Sugar were declared the champions following a 1-0 win in a match played at Awendo Green Stadium on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

Joseph Okwenda scored the opening goal for Mara Sugar as the Nairobi Eastlands side failed to score through clear chances by Dennis Cheruiyot and Matthias Isogol.

Mara Sugar will now grace the Premier League as not only debutants but also as the NSL champions, just as Shabana did last season. Their next game will be against Vihiga Bullets on Sunday.

Elsewhere, Naivas FC, who could get a promotion ticket through the playoffs, were 1-0 winners over Gusii FC, with a goal scored by Francis Nambute making the difference.

Nairobi United, with a chance to get a ticket to the top tier through the playoffs, also managed a win after beating Migori Youth 1-0.

A 3-0 win over SS Asad at Mumias Sports Complex meant that Mulembe United dodged the chop and will grace the National Super League next season again.
