Kwanthanze, Kakamega win East Africa school games girls’ volleyball titles

Kwanthanze Secondary retained their East Africa school games girls’ volleyball title after winning the final 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) against Cheptil to finish the competition without dropping a single set.  

On their part,  Kakamega School registered six wins in the seven-team rugby 15s round-robin competition to win the East Africa title they last won in 2016 in Eldoret.  

Kwanthanze coach, Justine Kigwari, while attributing the good run and the win to improved service and blocks,  has called for unity to ensure the growth of volleyball in Kenya.   

“Today was not competitive as we had worked on our services and the back court defence, and I am happy we have retained the trophy.

“We have dominated as a country in these games and we need to work together going forward to ensure the growth of volleyball in Kenya. 

Rather than coaches trying to pull each other down, we should join hands to ensure the sport continues to  prosper not only at the school games but also on the international stage,” said Kigwari. 

 Cheptil coach Stephen Mutai blamed stage fright for the loss adding that he will blister his squad as he looks forward to winning the title in the near future. 

“We had played against Kwanthanze for a 3-0 win and a 3-2 loss before these games and we believed we had what it takes to fight for the title. 

Senior players, however,  did not click in the final and were sluggish in their play. High was also a big undoing as we did not manage a single block.
