Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Basketball teams took full advantage of their Makande Gymnasium home court as they registered important wins in the Kenya Basketball Federation- Premier League over the weekend.
Despite losing their first game by a single basket in a 70-72 thriller against Equity Hawks, the Men’s side took it in chin and within 48 hours imeashed their wrath on Umoja Basketball Team in a 95-63 thrashing. In this particular game, KPA took charge of proceedings in four busy quarters (28-13/14-15/22-22/31-13).
The likes of Frank Omondi, Tobias Odhiambo, Job Byron, Lennox Wanje and Leek Deng were the main influencers of the game for the Dockers combining for 50 points. Umoja was managing the pressure well especially after a woeful first half, but tactical changes from Coach Ken Wambua made them match the home team man for man.
Umoja’s Tony Okol was the star man for his side, throwing in important baskets. He had 18 points,4 rebounds and 3 assists in the game. Stephen Ouma had 12 points in the game with his defensive prowess also coming into play. Umoja had court presence with their big players causing difficulty on the ring but the slick and experienced KPA side had it all in calm as they went about their business in front of their home crowd.
In another Men’s game, Eldonet Platinums silenced Africa National University WolfPacks 62-57 away at the University of Nairobi Grounds. Platinums had the first and fourth quarter with host side ANU controlling the second and third quarters. James Omweno was the star for Platinum as he posted 22 points assisted by Benson Moibi on 14 points and Clifford Mumbo on 10 points. The Eldonets however almost paid for some wayward defending as the ANU side began pushing. Wolf Packs on their part had Paul Raburu on electric mode posting 16 points with three rebounds to his name as well. His overall team play was helpful to a larger extent but not to the desirable levels.
ANU had a difficult weekend after falling again inside 48 hours to University rivals Strathmore Blades in a 59-55 result. South Sudan import Garang Ding had a sensational 20 points in the bag assisted by Darryl Omondi who posted 10 points. Blades dominated the Court but failed to execute more points.ANU on their part had Aubry Chitwa on 12 points following behind Paul Raburu on 16 points.
