KKPL director hails Kabaddi progress, eyes university championship launch

Kenya Kabaddi Premier League (KKPL) Lead Director Mudaspack Otieno has acknowledged the strides made in the sport.

As the sport continues to gain recognition in the country, Otieno pointed out persistent hurdles slowing down progress, particularly the lack of sponsorship.

Speaking to People Sport on the sidelines of Week 22 of the KKPL Season 2, the administrator expressed optimism about the direction kabaddi is taking in Kenya. He hailed the league’s expansion and the increasing number of tournaments, which have contributed to player development and nationwide visibility.

“Honestly, I appreciate the remarkable growth we have seen since 2025,” Otieno said. “This year alone, we have had multiple championships, from the Mombasa Beach Kabaddi event in March, the community-based Kabaddi Mtaani Circuit, the Junior Nationals, and currently the Kenya Kabaddi Premier League (KKPL). We are also set to introduce the University Championship soon.” Otieno said.

Efforts to evolve Kabaddi

These efforts reflect an evolving structure aiming to establish kabaddi as a mainstream sport in Kenya, with a clear pathway from junior levels to elite competition. However, Otieno was quick to caution that progress has been gradual rather than exponential.

“I can’t say we have stagnated, but the growth has been slow,” he noted. “The main challenge is the lack of partners who can help facilitate players’ welfare, logistics, and other elements needed for a stable and professional championship structure.”

As Week 22 of the KKPL comes to a close, Black Falcons, based in Lucky Summer, lead the men’s standings with a perfect record — 22 wins from 22 matches, accumulating 110 points. They are followed closely by Githurai Cheetahs (100 points) and Kasarani Lions (89 points), with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Assassins and RDU rounding out the top five. These five teams are poised for the playoffs.

Despite the clear enthusiasm and competitive spirit on display, Otieno emphasised the urgent need for investment to help sustain the league’s momentum and support grassroots initiatives.

According to Otieno, the KKPL continues to inspire a new generation of players and fans, but the journey ahead will depend heavily on strategic partnerships and institutional support.
