Kisumu County to host Cecafa women U-18 Championships

Kisumu County will host this year’s Council for East & Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) women’s Under-18 Championships, following the awarding of hosting rights to Kenya for the development tournament.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba made the announcement on Friday during the Mashujaa Day celebrations when he met Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o while on an inspection tour of the Moi Stadium in Kisumu as the Ministry sought to appraise the state of the sporting facilities in Kisumu that are available for the tournament.

“To imagine that barely 11 months ago, Kenya’s football scene was in a freezer, a complete standstill, amidst the suspension from International football by FIFA & today, just 11 months later, we are having such a debate, shows that truly our football is on the right trajectory,” said Ababu.

The sports CS together with the Kisumu County government agreed to partner in developing and improving sporting facilities within the County, starting with the now delapilated five thousand capacity Moi Stadium which was also inspected.

“We are determined to continue on this path to a full revival of our sporting ecosystem. Indeed, this is a clear indication of transformation that we are targeting under our TalantaHela initiative, where we seek to build careers from talents, by monetizing our sporting spaces,” said Ababu who added that talents can only be developed under the right conditions.
